Dear Barnard community,

As we mentioned in an email shortly before spring break, we are now entering the main construction phase in the new Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being in Barnard Hall. The construction team spent spring break preparing for this heavier construction work which will begin this Monday and continue through the remainder of this semester and into the summer months.

We will keep you updated as we start this work and we know that it will be disruptive at times. Please note, we will not be doing loud construction activities during Reading Days and Finals Week, and will be doing our best to minimize the disruption to the Barnard community.

During this coming week, you can expect noise and vibration impacts from masonry saws opening concrete slabs and walls, and the chopping and removal of concrete. The schedule is:

  • On Monday, the demolition crews will begin work on the westside of the first floor and we expect the greatest noise and vibration impacts to be in the Streng Studio, and the Physical Education and LeFrak Center second floor offices.
  • On Tuesday, the crews will begin similar work in the lower level to the west of the tunnel. Impacts that day will be felt on the west side of the lower level and the first floor, and to a lesser extent in the areas impacted on Monday.
  • On Wednesday, workers will begin opening the facade on the westside of Barnard Hall to build the entrance to the construction site. This work may create a disturbance to residents on Claremont Avenue, and occupants on the lower floors of Barnard Hall will likely experience more significant noise impacts. All outside work that day will be contained within the plywood shed in place on Claremont Avenue as the construction members move material and debris. We will have flag people directing traffic along the sidewalk as needed.
  • Additional work will continue throughout the remainder of the week.

Also, please note that the timing of construction work can often change and that we will keep you updated should there be any major changes to our plans.
