- Non-Barnard Options for Summer Housing
Current matriculated Barnard students who will be enrolled at the College for the Fall 2025 semester may apply for summer housing. Students must be in "good standing" to be considered (no outstanding Bursar holds, disciplinary probation, etc).
- Note: visiting students and students approved to return from a leave of absence for Fall 2025 who will be taking a Barnard Summer 2025 class are eligible to apply for summer housing for the block(s) they'll be enrolled in a class.
Students who graduate in 2025, VISP & visiting students, and/or students not currently enrolled (i.e. students on a leave of absence) are not eligible. Students who take or are required to take a leave of absence will cease to be eligible and must vacate summer housing.
Students who are not eligible for Barnard summer housing are encouraged to check out the links to alternative summer housing opportunities below.
While we always hope to provide housing to as many applicants as possible, space in summer housing is limited. Assignment to summer housing (or to a particular residence hall or room type) is not guaranteed. Priority will be determined by a combination of application date, class year, and whether students are enrolled in a Barnard Summer class and/or eligible for the subsidized summer housing rate (see below).
Barnard campus offices may sponsor students to pay the lower Subsidized rate for summer housing (offices do not need to pay the difference in price from the Standard rate).
- Students must work 30+ hours/week during the summer to qualify for the lower subsidized rate.
- Positions in Columbia campus offices are not eligible.
- Students may work multiple campus jobs to total 30+ hours/week, but each position must be in a Barnard office.
- Supervisors should fill out the Summer Sponsor Form (PDF) with the employee to submit to the Res Life office by Monday, April 21, 2025. Students must additionally submit the summer housing application.
- Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that students work the required hours and informing the Res Life office if the student resigns or is terminated from the position.

Students will provide ranked room types and building preferences on their application. Rooms will be available at CG, 600 and 121st Street.
The number of Single rooms will be very limited. Students should expect to be assigned to Doubles (i.e. with a roommate). Students who need housing accommodations should check the section below for more information.
Students will be grouped in suites by the time period they apply for. It will not be possible to change the requested time period after the application deadline.
Students may create a roommate request group with 1 other student on the application (request groups are limited to 2 students). Both students must apply for the same time period in order for their request to live together to be considered. Roommate requests are not guaranteed.
Students who need an accommodation for a disability or medical condition should submit a CARDS Summer Housing Accommodation Request no later than Friday, April 11, 2025.
Summer room assignments (in 600, 121, and CG) will have air-conditioning and access to a kitchen and shared semi-private bathroom.
- Note: Reunion Workers and Access Barnard summer staff will be housed in the Quad, which has shared hallway bathrooms.
Accommodations must be re-requested each year. Students who had approved accommodations last Summer will need to apply again. Students already approved for 2025-26 accommodations in the Pre-Lottery request process do not need to re-request accommodations for the summer (unless they are requesting additional accommodations that are not approved for the academic year).
Students who wish to receive mail & packages over the summer will need to request to keep their Student mailbox open for the summer.
For questions about mail & packages, please email MailServices@barnard.edu.
To avoid a cancellation fee, students must cancel by:
- Applied for Full Summer or Block A only -- 1pm Friday, April 24, 2024
- Apply for Block B only -- Wednesday, May 29, 2024
For the full summer cancellation policy and a link to the Summer Cancellation Form, please visit barnard.edu/reslife/summer-housing/cancellations.
The College hopes to provide housing to all applicants if possible; however, space is finite. Priority will be determined by a combination of application date, class year, and whether students are enrolled in a Barnard Summer class, are part of Summer Research Institute (SRI), or are the recipient of a Beyond Barnard Summer Internship Grant.
Applicants will be emailed by 11pm Thursday, April 24, 2025 to confirm whether space is available for them in summer housing.
Room & roommate assignments will be emailed to students:
- Applied for Full Summer or Block A only -- by 11pm on Wednesday, May 21, 2025
- Applied for Block B only -- by 11pm on Wednesday, July 2, 2025
Summer bills will be emailed to students around May 1 with a late May payment deadline. Students may email bursar@barnard.edu to inquire about payment plan options for summer charges.

- Students in Spring housing who want to stay on campus before May 29 must apply for May Interim and will be charged a prorated amount of $911.95 (for 13 nights). Reunion workers who apply for Full Summer or Block A would move into summer room assignments (in 600, CG, or 121) on May 25 like other summer residents. Students should not unload any items at their residence hall before first signing for their room keys at the Res Life office.
A limited number of carts will be available for check-out from the front desk of each residence hall. Students are encouraged to bring their own cart, hand truck, or dolly to help move themselves in.
Students who wish to move in later than the check-in dates above may do so, but they can only check-in and sign for their keys when the Res Life office is open (9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday; closed on holidays) and must be checked out of any interim housing by the deadline given. Late check-ins will also take place in the Res Life office (110 Sulzberger).
Late check-ins on evenings & weekends are not available. The Res Life office will be closed on Juneteenth (Thur, June 19) and check-ins will not be available on that day.
The cost for Summer Housing will not be prorated as a result of checking in late. Requests to check in early cannot be considered.
Students must move out before the check-out deadlines below:
- Block A only -- 5pm on Friday, July 4, 2025
- Full Summer or Block B only -- 5pm on Friday, August 8, 2025*
Extensions are not available. Students are welcome to check out earlier, but the summer housing charge will not be prorated.

When students move out, they must complete the steps below:
- Completely move out all items from their room/suite/building.
- Turn in their room keys via a Check-Out Envelope at their residence hall Front Desk.
- Complete the Confirm Check-Out Form on the Housing Portal.
Students who fail to turn in their room keys will be charged a $100 per key replacement fee.
A limited number of carts will be available for check-out from the front desk of each residence hall. Students are encouraged to bring their own cart, hand truck, or dolly to help move themselves out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Students are typically not assigned to the same room or suite for the Summer that they are currently living in for the Spring or will be living in for the Fall.
All suites must be completely empty for the Barnard Facilities office to clean and do maintenance work between the Spring & Summer and between the Summer & Fall. Students may not continue to live in or leave belongings in suites while they are being cleaned.
Students who sign up for May Interim and/or August Interim will need to relocate (with all of their belongings) to temporary rooms in the Quad while the buildings are being cleaned for the Summer and Fall.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any early move-ins.
Students may move in late; however, please note that:
- Students may only check-in and sign for room keys when the Res Life office is open (9am-5pm on non-holiday weekdays). The Res Life office will be closed on Juneteenth (Thur, June 19) and check-ins will not be available on that day.
- The summer housing charge will not be prorated for moving in late.
2025 Only: Extensions can only be considered for students enrolled in Block B summer classes (which run through Friday, August 15). For more information, please visit August Interim.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any extensions to the Summer check-out deadlines. Students must move out by:
- 5pm on Friday, July 4, 2025 (Block A only)
- 5pm on Friday, August 8, 2025* (Ful Summer or Block B only)
Students may move out early; however, please note that the summer housing charge will not be prorated.
Students who sign up for May Interim or August Interim should expect to be required to move to a temporary shared double room in the Quad so that the Barnard Facilities office can clean the residence halls for the Summer & Fall.
Students in May Interim must move to their summer room assignment and check out from the interim room by 5pm on Monday, May 25, 2025 (no exceptions).
Students in August Interim will be required to move to their Fall room assignment and check out from their interim room when required by the College. That date will depend on when their Fall room is finished being cleaned.
Students approved for May & August Interim housing will be required to stay on campus for the entire time. The interim periods are not intended to provide storage for students’ belongings so they may leave campus.
