In January 2021, assistant professor of economics Belinda Archibong presented findings in Columbia University's Academic Commons publication on the effects of negative press on vaccination rollouts. The co-authored paper, titled "'We are Not Guinea Pigs': The Effects of Negative News on Vaccine Compliance," studies the setbacks caused by the 2000 disclosure of fatalities during Pfizer trials for global polio vaccination efforts. This case study is used to provide insight into understanding how negative news information impacts vaccine compliance.
On March 11, Archibong will present the paper at the National Bureau of Economic Research's Children Program Meeting Spring 2021.
Through her research in development economics, political economy, economic history, and environmental economics, Archibong investigates the role of historical institutions and environment in inequality of access to public services and the development of human capital.
