Eduardo Moncada speaking from a podium

On January 5, Eduardo Moncada, assistant professor of political science, published the review essay “The Politics of Crime in Latin America: New Insights, Future Challenges” in the journal Latin American Politics and Society. Moncada, whose research interests include how political factors shape urban violence and local democracy and development, examined four books that looked at crime, politics, and violence in Latin America.

Moncada’s essay includes summaries from each of the four books (Marcelo Bergman’s More Money, More Crime; Anthony W. Fontes’ Mortal Doubt; Benjamin Lessing’s Making Peace in Drug Wars; and Carlos Solar’s Government and Governance of Security), a discussion on their contribution to the conversation around government’s responses to crime and often unstudied forms of violence and crime, and poses key questions for future research.
