On March 20, 2024, Kimberly Marten, professor of political science, participated in a Network 20/20 panel, alongside Stanford University professor Kathryn Stoner, titled “Putin's Perpetual Power: What It Means for Russia?.”
Network 20/20, the event’s sponsor, is a New York-based global education organization that brings policy experts together to discuss current events. Marten and Stoner were interviewed by Courtney Doggart, the Network 20/20 president and a Columbia SIPA alum for this panel. The professors discussed Russia’s 2024 presidential elections, which concluded Sunday, March 17, and explored major trendlines for Vladimir Putin’s continuing presidency and the war in Ukraine. Marten broke down the main components of Putin’s leadership, emphasizing the danger of his authoritarian-style rule over Russia. Marten and Stoner also spoke on the reverberating effects of the June 2023 Wagner group mutiny, and anti-war sentiment among Russian voters.
