On November 8 and 9, 2024, Severin Fowles, Professor of Anthropology and American Studies, Chair of the Anthropology Department, and Director of the Archaeology Track, participated in the annual conference of the Center for Big Bend Studies.
Fowles delivered the keynote address at the Vic and Mary Jane Morgan University Center at Sul Ross State University, where he presented his groundbreaking research on Indigenous cultures in the American Southwest. His talk, titled “The Athapaskan Image: Seven Centuries of Innovation in the American Southwest,” explores Southern Athapaskan rock art’s significance in shaping our understanding of the region’s cultural traditions. Fowles’s work focuses on the Northern Rio Grande Valley, offering fresh perspectives on image production and identifying broader patterns across the Pueblo and Southern Plains.
