On June 1, 2022, Tara Well, associate professor of psychology, published a new book titled Mirror Meditation: The Power of Neuroscience and Self-Reflection to Overcome Self-Criticism, Gain Confidence, and See Yourself with Compassion. The book details how mirror meditation can enhance mental health and well-being by helping individuals cope with anxiety, uncertainty, loneliness, social isolation, and social anxiety. Professor Well’s research shows that acknowledging and naming social anxiety can alleviate some of the tension that individuals may feel when surrounded by others.

Socially anxious people can actually build a stronger rapport with others by letting those around them know they’re feeling uncomfortable. Additionally, mirror meditation techniques allow people to learn how to relax and accept themselves in high-anxiety situations. According to Professor Well, making mirror meditation part of a regular routine enables individuals to be fully present in the current moment with an open awareness and kind intentions toward themselves.
