From its early days as an institution of higher learning for women, Barnard College pursued a curriculum that embraced the ideal of mens sana in corpore sano—“a sound mind in a sound body”—an aphorism taken from the works of the satiric Roman poet Juvenal. The tradition of Greek Games was only one example of the College’s commitment to fitness and athleticism, to which this array of photographs from our past attests.
