NEW YORK, August 25, 2021 — Barnard College welcomes Marina Catallozzi, M.D., MSCE, as the inaugural Vice President of Health and Wellness and Chief Health Officer. This new position is a joint appointment at Barnard and Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), where Dr. Catallozzi will retain her appointments as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics, Director of the General Public Health Program, and as an adolescent medicine provider. She will join Barnard on September 1.
In this inaugural role, Dr. Catallozzi will lead the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, which provides support for students’ physical, mental, and financial wellness; the Primary Care Health Services and the Rosemary Furman Counseling Center; coordinate the College’s response to infectious disease threats; and enhance undergraduate medical research opportunities for Barnard students. She will also closely collaborate with Human Resources to expand wellness initiatives for faculty and staff.
“The creation of this leadership role builds momentum behind an effort we began more than two years ago with the launch of Feel Well, Do Well @ Barnard, a campus-wide health and wellness initiative, followed by the announcement last fall of the creation of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, which provides a centralized hub and an umbrella organization for our physical, mental, and financial well-being initiatives,” said President Sian Leah Beilock. “Dr. Catallozzi will lead these initiatives and advance our commitment to well-being at a time when this work is more important than ever.”
Dr. Catallozzi is the current Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she has served as the Pediatric Clerkship Director and Medical Education Scholarly Projects Track Director and co-founded the COVID-19 Student Service Corps; Associate Professor of Population and Family Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, where she has served as the Director of the General Public Health program, co-lead of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Certificate, and faculty in Mailman’s Core Curriculum; and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics. Her research has focused on adolescent and young adult access to confidential and clinical preventive services, adolescent relationship violence, adolescent and parent communication and decision-making in clinical trial participation, adolescent pregnancy prevention, and curricula focused on LGBTQ+ health.
Dr. Catallozzi is an adolescent medicine specialist and is board-certified in both pediatrics and adolescent medicine. She has an active adolescent medicine practice in Washington Heights and is dedicated to improving the health of the community; she uses a strengths-based approach to adolescent patient care, programming, and research.
Dr. Catallozzi earned a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience in 1992 from Brown University and her medical degree in 1996 from Brown University School of Medicine, as part of the Program in Liberal Medical Education. She completed her internship, residency, and chief residency in pediatrics, as well as her adolescent medicine fellowship, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a fellow in the Primary Care Research Training Program in Health Resources and Services Administration at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, she earned a Master of Science in clinical epidemiology.
