In addition to teaching at Barnard as an assistant professor in human rights and anthropology and directing the College’s Human Rights program, J.C. Salyer also works as a lawyer for the Arab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC). AAFSC is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that provides culturally and linguistically competent, trauma-informed social services to a multigenerational community of immigrants and refugees. Among other services, AAFSC is the only organization in the country to assist refugees with paying off the burdensome travel loans some take out to pay for passage to the United States.
