What Happens When I Graduate?
Do I get to Keep my Barnard account?
Every year, Barnard accounts for the graduating class are suspended once they have graduated. Please note that your Barnard student account will be disabled on August 1st and there will be no extensions nor exceptions. Please read the IT Account Management Policy for more details. You will lose access to any application accessed via Barnard.Onelogin.com, which includes but is not limited to Student Planning, gBear Suite, Microsoft O365, Workday, etc. In order not to lose any of your saved content, you can transfer all of your gBear emails and data from Google Drive to a personal email account, or as stated below, to your Barnard Alumnae email account. Please be aware this also means you must update any additional personal (non-Barnard) accounts that may use your current @barnard.edu email address, such as Netflix, Instagram, Amazon, to a personal email address. This will ensure you do not lose administration of these services, as you cannot gain access to your Barnard account for this purpose.
As mentioned, all graduates, are now able to choose to retain a Barnard affiliation with an Alumnae email account, a Barnard affiliated email address they could use forever! Please visit the Barnard Alumnae page for more details on how to do so and you can choose to transfer your gBear emails and Google Drive content to your Alumnae account instead of a personal account.
How do I transfer my gBear emails and Drive?
You can transfer all of your gBear emails easily using the Google Transfer tool provided by Google. Make sure you are logged into your gBear account when beginning this process so that it transfers from your Barnard gBear account to your destination account, whether it be personal or your Alumnae account.
- Google will give you the option to also transfer your Drive contents using this tool. Please DO NOT choose this option, choose Email ONLY. Unfortunately, while this seems to be the easiest most convenient way, using the Google Transfer tool for transferring your Drive will transfer your individual Drive content plus any and all things shared with your Drive ever, causing a storage issue. This often will stop the transferring process altogether and you will have to start over.
To save a copy of your Drive contents, and any other data you may need, use the Google Takeout tool. Instead of directly transferring content from your gBear account to another account, it allows you to download a copy of all your Drive content into a compressed zip file that Google will send to you. Save that file wherever you want and that's it. You can import the content into another account such as your Alumnae account or personal account if you choose to.
What Data can I take with me?
If you are unsure what data you can backup/transfer please read through this Google support article which provides detailed information about downloading your data and how to import it into a different account, if you want downloaded copies that you can save. Typical data that students usually download or transfer are emails, Google Drive, photos, contacts, videos, etc.
Can I forward my gBear emails to another account instead?
Yes you can, but forwarding will only work while your Barnard account is still active. Once your Barnard account has been disabled you will no longer receive any forwarded emails, and this does not transfer any older emails that you already had previous to setting up the email forwarding.
