WHAT: Barnard College, in partnership with Director of Sustainability and Climate Action Sandra Goldmark, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and the Columbia Climate School, will host a city-wide celebration of the powerful sustainability practice known as circularity. Circularity is sharing, reusing, and repairing our goods to build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient city. When we create a product, we take into account the end of its life and where it will end up when we’re done with it. This inaugural event will highlight local circularity champions and special guests will announce new initiatives to identify and support New York’s small businesses, community organizations, and schools, leading the way to a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable New York.
WHO: This Barnard-hosted event will be led by faculty member Sandra Goldmark and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine. Sandra Goldmark is Barnard College’s Director of Campus Sustainability and Climate Action and an Associate Professor of Professional Practice in Theatre. She is also the Senior Assistant Dean for Interdisciplinary Engagement at the Columbia Climate School. Goldmark is a designer and entrepreneur whose work focuses on circular economy and interdisciplinary climate strategies. She founded and operated Fixup, a social enterprise repair service dedicated to healthy and circular patterns of consumption, and co-created the Sustainable Production Toolkit, a free climate action and sustainability resource for performing arts organizations. Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine was elected to represent the 7th Council district. They will be joined by representatives from the Columbia Climate School, a global leader in climate and sustainability education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
